The Influence of Caregiving Stress on Depression of Spouse Caregivers: The Moderating Effect of Cognitive Emotion Regulation

Abstract

|
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of spouse caregivers¡¯ caregiving stress on depression, which is an indicator of psychological maladjustment, and to examine the moderating effects of using adaptive and maladaptive cognitive emotion regulation strategies on the relationship between caregiving stress and depression.
Methods: For this purpose, a survey was conducted on 190 spouse caregivers who are taking care of husbands and wives who are patients.
Results: Results of the study indicate that, first, the caregiving stress had a significant effect on the depression of the spouse caregiver. Second, the use of maladaptive cognitive emotion regulation strategies moderated the relationship between caregiving stress and depression. Conversely, there was no moderating effect of using adaptive cognitive emotion regulation strategies.
Conclusions: Based on these findings, intervention plans to alleviate the negative effects of spouse caregivers¡¯ caregiving stress on depression are discussed.
